Score

5.7/10

Pros

  • Innovative blend of RTS and MMORPG elements.
  • Large-scale battles offered unique gameplay experiences.
  • Attempted to offer a narrative in an RTS setting.

Cons

  • Potential of massive battles was hinted but not fully realized.

In the realm of gaming, few titles try to bridge two vastly different genres. Kingdom Under Fire 2 was one such attempt, merging the strategic complexity of a real-time strategy game with the depth and immersion of an MMORPG. The result was a title with sprawling battles and character-driven narratives. Unfortunately, the journey was cut short when it was announced on September 17, 2021, that the English version of the game’s servers would close by October 26, 2021.

  • Game developer: Blueside
  • Game publisher: Gameforge
  • Release Date: 2019
  • Platforms: PC
  • Genre: Real-Time Strategy/MMORPG

Gameplay

Kingdom Under Fire 2 ventured into blending real-time strategy with MMORPG components. Players were expected to command vast armies and also jump into personal combat, an experience that might not be everyone’s cup of tea but was certainly distinctive.

Players were introduced to managing armies, recruiting, and character progression. The idea of having battles with up to 1000 NPCs was introduced, but it remained a feature to be fully realized in the future.

On the graphical front, the game managed to handle a large number of units with relative stability. Every unit had its behavior, which brought dynamism to the battles.

The narrative was present, offering players a context for their actions, though it may not have been the strongest aspect of the game. Side quests provided additional tasks and objectives for players to tackle.

Conclusion

Kingdom Under Fire 2 was an interesting experiment in game design, aiming to bridge RTS and MMORPG genres. While it had its moments of brilliance, there were areas where it struggled to find a balance between its ambitious goals. Its closure was a reminder of the challenges faced by innovative projects in the gaming world.
