BRAIN / OUT features a unique two-dimensional post-soviet dystopia to explore, and the unique atmosphere of the game and the broad range of weaponry create an authentic experience for all the lovers of the genre. The real-time action allows the players to perform many tricks and movements, and the developers put the shooting skill above all other mechanics of the game. However, the game features multiple progression systems and other mechanics to keep the players engaged.

Maps in BRAIN / OUT introduce a grey dystopian effect, and most areas are covered in various military accessories and other litter. The players explore bombed-out tenements, broken walls and windows, and most maps do not have vast opened areas. The levels feature narrow tunnels, metal boxes, and tight corners to use in combat as a cover. Each spot on the map leaves the players vulnerable to an assault, and countless obstacles make bullet-spam inefficient, which enables skill-based strategic gameplay. The players can only see the area in front of their characters, and other locations are covered by fog of war.

The experience in BRAIN / OUT begins with the players choosing their weapon for their first game, and there are only a few options available. You have to use a mouse to point your gun and a keyboard to perform various movements. The purpose of all featured game modes is to get as many kills as possible, and there are the most popular ones:

  • Deathmatch puts several players to the map to allow them to fight to become one last standing with the most kills.
  • Normal mode focuses on team-based combat to get as many kills as possible.
  • Domination forces teams to capture specific spots on the maps, and they need to hold it for a period to win the game.
  • Assault is similar to normal, but the difference is that the players cannot respawn during each round.

BRAIN / OUT features a complex progression system, and the players earn experience points for each game. That allows them to unlock additional skill trees and upgrades, and that provides you with a selection of passive perks. You can also various currencies to unlock more weapons and upgrades for them, which include silent footsteps, increased movement speed, armour vest and many others. The players can also obtain additional bonuses from the loot boxes, which the players can earn by completing various objectives and investing real money in the in-game shop. These boxes also provide the characters with additional experience points, skills and weapon parts, which can be combined into a unique, powerful gun.

The developers of BRAIN / OUT do include the in-depth customization system; however, the levels and equipment do not matter as much because all of the shots can be deadly, and the skill of the participant is the essential aspect of the gameplay. You can party up with your friends and other strangers online, and the built-in ranked ladder allows you to participate in battles against enemies with a similar skill level. The global leaderboard also allows the most hardcore gamers to compete against the best and show off their achievements to others. BRAIN / OUT fits both casual and hardcore players due to simple basic mechanics; however, the game requires a lot of practice and experience to learn maps and mechanics to become better than others.
