Dead Island Gameplay

Dead Island’s primary setting is the tropical island of Banoi, a paradise, which the central character visits during the zombie outbreak. Most living creatures become living dead, and the player’s primary goal is to survive and find out what happened. For some reason, four main characters have immunity, and there is a prison on the island, in which you are supposed to find a helicopter to escape. You can participate in various activities along the way and meet other survivors to complete their objectives and acquire multiple rewards. The game enables you to team up with three other real players and complete the journey in an immersive coop game mode.

There are many different ways to kill zombies in Dead Island, and there are two types of melee weaponry. Sharp weapons include knives, machete, swords, axes and many others. Bats, hammers, pipes, maces represent blunt ones. Each tool has a durability rating, and it slowly breaks over time. You can repair it using specific resources or throw it away and find a new one. The game also features various firearms, such as rifles, shotguns, revolvers and others. It would help if you scavenged ammo or craft it yourself. The players can eliminate massive groups of zombies using grenades, Molotov, land mines and other unique weapons.

In Dead Island, the players can gain experience points to level up and improve their attributes. Some of those you can manually put into various perks in three talent trees. The first branch allows the character to go into a rage state, crushing the enemies. The second one enables the players to improve the handling of firearms. The last one focuses on the game’s survival aspect, and you can increase regeneration, loot density and become harder to kill. The players also have to collect various resources, such as water, food, money, etc. That way, you can scavenge weapon recipes to improve existing ones or craft powerful artefacts by using such currencies.

Progressing through Dead Island unlocks various areas and specific zones with unique enemies, which may drop rare items and valuable currencies. Some zombies may have powerful abilities, and the players have to consider it before engaging in combat. Stamina system allows you to run for a significant period, to jump or to attack. Running out of it leads to a short-term vulnerable state, in which zombies can easily defeat the character. You can also land critical strikes, but the chance depends on your and opponent’s level and other attributes.

Dead Island features an immersive tutorial in which the main character wakes up after a long party only to find out everyone is already dead. This part is designed for only one player, and it serves to teach the players basics of the gameplay. During this quest chain, you find out you are immune to the virus and meet other story-related characters. After that, you can join any game through the internet or invite your friends to your lobby. You can explore various locations freely to acquire better gear or search and face dangerous enemies to earn experience points and unique bonuses. The game fits both hardcore and casual gamers due to its versatile yet straightforward gameplay, and the immersive zombie apocalypse atmosphere can entertain the lovers of the genre.
