Diablo 2 Gameplay

Diablo 2 storyline features four chapters called "Acts". Each one has a predetermined path and quests, but some areas and dungeons between key locations are randomly generated. The players progress through the story by completing tasks within each Act; the dungeons can be cleared for extra experience and loot. Act I is similar to the original Diablo: you appear in a city called the Rogue Encampment, with plains and forests in the wilderness area and the Monastery, a typical medieval fortress. The second Act is inspired by Ancient Egypt's desert and tombs, and the main city called Lut Gholein, the Jewel of the Desert, looks like a Middle Eastern city and palace from the times of Crusades. Act III is located in the Central American jungles; Kurast takes its inspiration from the lost Mayan civilization. Act IV takes place in Hell, and it's the shortest one with only three quests compared to the other Acts that have six.

The Lord of Destruction expansion adds the fifth chapter, Act V, which continues the story after the end of Act IV. Act V's sends the player in the exploration of the Mount Arreat, with alpine plateaus, icy tunnels and caverns. Occasional portals can take the player to dungeons in Hell for extra monsters and experience. After reaching the summit of Arreat, the player gains access to the Worldstone Keep (the architecture design may be reminiscent of Angkor Wat and other Hindu temples).

The storyline of Diablo 2

The plot of the game unfolds after the events of the first game in the world named Sanctuary. Previously, an unnamed warrior defeated Diablo and tried to keep the essence of the Lord of Terror in their own body. However, the hero was seduced by the evil spirit, which caused the demons to come back to the world.

A group of adventurers passing through the Rogue Camp hear these stories about destruction and decide to find the source of evil within the seduced Dark Wanderer. As the plot develops, the truth about the warrior's corruption is revealed. Throughout the story, the cut scenes show the Dark Wanderer's travels on behalf of Marius, who is following him.

Character Development in Diablo 2

Difficulty levels
There are three difficulty levels: Normal, Nightmare and Hell. When you start the game for the first time, you automatically play on Normal. After you've completed all acts, the Nightmare level becomes available to you, and after one more time, you can play on Hell. At each difficulty level monsters become more powerful and harder to fight, but the experience is gained faster and more useful items drop from creatures. When killed on Nightmare and Hell, the character loses some of the experience.
Hardcore
After completing the game on Normal difficulty, a new option becomes available. While creating a new hero, you may turn on the Hardcore mode. In this game mode, the character dies permanently. If it happens, the game is over, and there is no way back. Hardcore does not offer any advantages other than moral satisfaction and adrenaline.
Attributes
For each gained level, the character receives five stat points, which can be divided into four primary characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Energy. Attributes can also be upgraded with items.

Crafting in Diablo 2

Diablo 2 features a unique crafting mechanics: the Horadric Cube which combines two or more pieces into a new one. The cube allows you to mix equipment, potions, stones and other items. The outcome usually provides a much more powerful artefact. The size of the cube is two to four cells, and that can also be used as an extension of the character's inventory.

Graphics in Diablo 2

As the first game of the series, Diablo 2 is a two-dimensional game with an isometric camera. The designers used the 3D models that add volume and depth. That is done by displacing decoration sprites and curved 2D sprites in a way they look three-dimensional.

The design of Diablo 2 has become more abundant in details comparing to the original, mainly because the team had more artists. The wide variety of locations is inspired by different art styles and historical periods. On your way, you will have to visit dark forests, a monastery captured by demons, desert dunes and the beautiful city of the east Lut Goleyn, the wild jungle of Kurast and Hell itself.

The first act of the game is inspired by medieval architecture, especially by Gothic style. The most obvious example is the Monastery: it's gloomy, tall and elegant. The Lut Gholein is inspired by Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Indian architectural monuments, and Kurast's design is based on the ancient Incas constructions. Still, it's evident that all these styles are smoothly combined with European gothic.

Aesthetically, Diablo 2 is a stunning game. Still, over the three years of development, the technologies became outdated, so Diablo 2 looked a little weaker than its competitors. The game does not support a resolution of more than 800x600; however, you can install an unofficial patch that allows maximizing the picture in size of all screen.

And if you try to stretch the picture with the help of mods, then the balance and artificial intelligence may break: the mechanics of the game, generation and enemies are explicitly designed for such a resolution. For example, playing using range characters on higher resolution allows you to simply break the game by cheating while killing enemies. They simply won't realize that you see and attack them.

Multiplayer in Diablo 2

In Diablo 2, there is an opportunity to play cooperatively with several players at once. It uses client-server technology. You can create your personal servers for others to join; however, in that case, you are not protected from cheating and abuse of various mechanics. You also can use dedicated servers, such as "Battle.net", and that protects all the players from abusive software and bugs. At the same time, no more than eight characters can be in a single game world. Some servers may apply additional rules for the players.

Basic Multiplayer Features:

• The amount of monster health and the amount of experience given for killing them increases accordingly to the number of players in the game world.
• Players are allowed to exchange various items through a secure trading window.
• Players can exchange personal messages and communicate in general server chats.
• Players can form a group to participate in multiple player-versus-player activities.

Additional features on dedicated servers:

• The attributes of the character and inventories are stored on the server, and they're not accessible for those who want to change the characteristics manually.
• There is a global ranking system that shows off the top thousand of the characters by the amount of experience gained.

Characters are initially in the neutral state; however, you may create a party or turn on the hostile status to be able to attack others.

Both sides have to confirm the creation of the group manually.

Aditional rules apply:

•The magic buffs and spells apply to friendly players and creatures (for example, the cries of a barbarian or aura of a paladin). There are specific interactions between them.
• Friendly players share experience for killing monsters.
• Most of the activities are available for cooperative game mode. For example, the quest on the assassination of the monster is counted not only to the one who completed it but to all the "helping" friendly characters who were near the person who completed the quest.

In the city, players can declare war to another character or several of them. After a "declaration of war," players become hostile to each other. That allows them to cause damage and kill each other; however, that can only be done outside of safe areas. If the character is killed by a player, then the item "ear" drops out as a trophy for killing indicating the level and name of the defeated hero.

The player-versus-player mode is mostly used for duels between characters. Using it for stealth attacks is quite difficult: a potential victim is warned of the appearance of a hostile character by the in-game interface. You can only attack outside of the city, and the war declaration is only available in the safe areas. Turning on this mode removes all active teleports and closes all the portals.

Diablo 2 Tips and Tricks

Resistances
Characters can increase specific resistance attributes to reduce the magic damage taken. There are four types of resistances: Fire, Ice, Lightning and Poison. The resistance you have, the less harm the character receives from the spells of this element. The maximum value of resistance is 75%, but with the help of some items, this value can be higher. Nightmare and Hell difficulty levels reduce the base resistance value by 40% and 100% respectively. Akin to resistances is also absorption. When absorbed, part of the damage caused by the spell transforms into hit points. For example, "10% Ice Absorb" means that 10% of the number heals back after the damage was taken.

Mercenaries
Characters can hire mercenaries. You can only have one mercenary at a time. They gain experience and can level up, increasing their characteristics. In different Acts, you can hire various mercenaries, for example, in the 1st Act - archers, in the 2nd - spearmen, and so on. You can equip a mercenary from the character's inventory, give him weapons, armour and a shield. Mercenaries from different Acts carry different items. For example, you can provide a bow or crossbow for an archer from Act 1, but not a sword or axe. You can give mercenaries potions in battle. If they die, then you can revive them in the city for a fee.

Personal Chest (Stash)
Each character has a chest for storing gold and items. Only your character has access to the contents of the chest. The amount of gold that can fit in it depends on the level of the chosen hero.

Belt
The character has a belt for quick access to potions and scrolls. A better one has more slots on it. In each slot, you can put one potion or one scroll. You can drink the medicine from your belt by right-clicking on it. Also, each active slot has a number, from 1 to 4, pressing one of these keys is the fastest way to drink a potion. When you pick up medicines, they are automatically placed on the belt in case there are free slots. If you hold SHIFT and right-click while buying healing potions from sellers, you automatically fill all the free slots on the belt. That also works with portal scrolls and identifications. Holding down SHIFT and right-clicking on the potions in your inventory, you automatically place them in a suitable slot on the belt. Holding down SHIFT and using keys 1-4 or right-clicking on potions in your belt, you transfer these potions to your mercenary.

Scrolls and Volumes

There are only two types of scrolls - the Scroll of the portal to the city and the Scroll of identification. The first is used to move to the city quickly; the second is needed to identify objects. Identification of the item allows you to find out its magical properties. Unidentified items cannot be used. To use the scroll, you need to right-click on it. Volumes allow you to combine up to 20 scrolls in one slot, and right-click on it allows you to cast a spell from this volume. Empty volumes can be filled again without purchasing a new one.

Teleports (Waypoints)
In many locations, you can find teleporters. They are designed to move through the Acts quickly. The teleports require activation, and after you can move to it through other teleports at any time. Teleporters can also be used to move within a single Act.

Games like Diablo 2

Diablo 3 is the sequel of this game, and it is also an action hack-and-slash role-playing game that sends the players to defeat Diablo, the dominant Evil of the in-game world. Players may choose from a variety of classes, and in-depth customization and large loot tables allow them to grind the best items in the game on multiple difficulties.
Path of Exile is a role-playing action game that features similar to Diablo 2 mechanics of grinding and farming items. It also has randomly-generated dungeons and bosses, and the environment features a similar universe full of dark forces for the players to defeat. A variety of classes also adds more depth into the gameplay.
Torchlight 3 is a role-playing action game where you control a character in a high fantasy environment. The isometric top-down view is a core feature of Diablo 2, and this game uses the same approach. Hack-and-slash combat mechanics are also used to defeat enemies, collect loot and explore randomly-generated dungeons. A large number of available items offers a wide range of possible customizations to the players.

Diablo 2 Classes

Amazon is a militant woman from the nomadic tribes of the South Seas. Constant wanderings often led to conflicts with other nations, so the Amazons studied the military craft well. They prefer bows, spears, and darts. This choice is not accidental - a remote weapon, such as a bow, is suitable both for hunting and for fighting at a distance. The skilful handling of the spear allowed them to compete on equal terms with well-trained and armed warriors. The Amazons have a reputation for being good support fighters and supporting melee warriors.
Barbarians live at inhabitable places, and in their opinion, other people are weak and frail. The constant survival within wildlife and wars with hostile tribes made them powerful war machines. They perfectly master any melee weapons, have tremendous strength and natural thick skin, which helps them to smooth out wounds from weaponry and magic. In battles, they often occupy a leading position, and they meet any danger on the front lines.

Sorceresses are descendants of the ancient Mages of the East. They know the secrets of the world and the elemental elements like fire, water and air, and the long training of the spirit and meditation were reflected in the physique of the sorceresses, they're fragile and thin. However, these characters are the best duelists. Fireballs, lightning, and rain of ice are a few of many of the sorceress's deadly spells.

Necromancers use the magic which is forbidden in many parts of the world. They dedicate their lives to study the afterlife world. Many years of studies conducted in the crypts made their skin pale, and they look very similar to a skeleton. The necromancer can revive the dead and subject them to his will, impose curses and make deadly poisons.

Paladins are the descendants of the faithful knights of Leoric, courageous warriors, pure hearts and the protectors of the traditions of Zakarum, Religions of the Light. Faith is the foundation of their life. There are no more pure and dedicated warriors than paladins. The proximity to the church allowed the paladins to study many prayers that give strength to him and his allies.

Assassins previously were supreme magicians that finally were seduced by Diablo, and began to serve evil. After that, the Killer Clan was created, whose members would follow the magicians and sorcerers, and kill those who abuse their power and cross the boundaries of the law. The Killer Clan is shrouded in mystery, for mere mortals it's just a myth, and even the supreme magicians don't know much about it. The assassins learn the secret fighting techniques that allow them to be lightning-fast, and instead of magic, they use traps and various energy attacks.

The Druids that inhabit the northern forests developed their magic independently from the eastern magic clans. As masters of the natural world, druids can summon animals, such as hawks, wolves, and even bears. They can call the elements of lights and winds. But the essential skill of druids is their ability to turn into animals and gain incredible power in these forms.
