Dungeons and Dragons Online Gameplay

Dungeons and Dragons Online is one of the first commercially successful projects based on the universe of D&D, famous board game. It uses the lore and mechanics of the original with some changes, caused by the inability to accurately transfer the mechanics of the source in the world of video games. The rules of DDO are created according to the D&D 3.5 ruleset, which was released in 2003, three years before the game was launched. Even though D&D is more than ten years old, it's still extremely popular and active. It often receives major updates with new content, challenges and improvements of the gameplay. The game has a vast, immense community, which is newbie-friendly; you can find a lot of fresh guides for all aspects of the game, from character creation to tactics of raids.

The gameplay of DDO is concentrated on roleplaying, which influenced the character editor a lot. You can not only change the appearance, but also choose a unique class out of a sophisticated system of archetypes and roles, create a unique build of skills, and choose a path of your hero. If you're a fan of roleplaying, you can write a background for your character and act like your hero would do. It's one of the fascinating things of Dungeons and Dragons Online because this game is one of the most popular among fans of roleplaying. It's oriented on PvE content, so it has much more mechanics based on the cooperation between players. For example, it has an excellent raid system, which requires twelve players with different roles to gather up in a team and clear the dungeon together.

Dungeons and Dragons Online have deep and fascinating lore, which is based on the original game. All of the playable races have the backgrounds, unique features, politics inside the race and relations with other living creatures. Some of them can't stand each other, while others coexist from the very beginning, and this thing influences the gameplay too. Unfortunately, some of the races and classes are available only for VIP or experienced players, so your choice is more likely to be limited when you play the game for the very first time. For example, the Iconic hero system is accessible only for players with sufficient playing experience; however, it's still worthy of playing for an iconic hero, because these characters have entirely new gameplay style and storyline.

Dungeons & Dragons Online Classes

The classes of D&D Online are divided into three categories:

  • Melee classes are specialized on close physical combat. They use melee weapons, from usual swords to daggers, or even crossbows. There are only four classes of that type: basic Fighter, furious Barbarian, holy Paladin, and exotic Monk.
  • Spell-casting classes perform ranged magical combat with various unique features. This category has the biggest amount classes of all: one of the most flexible classes, the sorcerer, the healers Cleric, Favoured Soul and Druid, arcane magician Wizard and mighty caster Warlock.
  • Specialist classes gather up all archetypes with unique combat roles. Among them are agile duelist Ranger, charismatic stealth class Rogue, battle musician Bard and unique pet-class Artificer.

Depending on the list of chosen skills, you can customize your class and change the main role of it. For example, heroes of the Wizard class can select the path of Necromancer and learn only spells of the dark magic.
