All events unfold in the Norvinsk economic zone. The city of Tarkov is the leading site of an armed clash between UN peacekeepers and Russian Military, as well as two private military companies. The soldiers have blocked all exits, and now those who fell into this trap will have to survive. It is possible to unite with friends, but it's dangerous to trust strangers. You always have to hide from other players and AI-controlled enemies.
The main active forces are two parties-USEC and BEAR. USEC was hired by the infamous international Corporation Terra Group to protect the employer's facilities in fierce battles, actively obstructing the local authorities' investigation of the Corporation's activities. It also provides security support and covers for illegal work and research by a foreign company. As for BEAR, it's a Russian organization hired to investigate and extract any evidence of unlawful actions of Terra Group. The player will have to choose the side of the conflict and support other mercenaries.
The story part is divided into scenarios and available as a separate multiplayer mode. It is possible to raid both alone and with a team.
The player can explore various places: private sectors and districts, factories and bases. There are also hidden locations in the game: laboratories, underground warehouses and closed offices of TerraGroup.

It's necessary to loot the dead enemies to obtain different items that can be used or sold at a flea market or auction. You can also trade to gain trust and get exclusive products. Still, you can become a merchant yourself and run your store, a staff of mercenaries and unique goods, adapt to a changing economy that responds vividly to the actions of other players and random events controlled by the game.
