Hades Gameplay

In Hades, you will play as a charming young rebel who dreams of escaping from his home to reach the Olympus. The main character is the prince of the underworld, Zagreus, son of Hades. The plot is quite simple: Hades is sure that escape is impossible because the world is reassembled randomly after each death of Zagreus. With the support of the gods and other heroes of ancient Greek mythology, Zagreus attempts to leave the kingdom again and again.

Hades' main feature is the heavy emphasis on storytelling, which is very rare for a roguelike. There is always something going on in Hades' house when Zagreus returns after failing to escape. The Sleep Incarnate Hypnos always comments on the hero's demise (he even names the enemy) and give some not-so-helpful advice for the next attempt. Characters often talk to each other, and eavesdropping on their conversations is fascinating too. Hades isn't the kind of game where you immediately start the next run after dying — you can do that, but it's better to go around all the rooms and say hello to everyone.

Hades provides players with a deep storyline and excellent voice acting, where each actor emotionally involves the player in the game world. You will not find dull and empty characters — each hero has an outstanding personality and complex motivation for action.

Even if you fail to complete the first region of the game, on the way you can still gather valuable resources that will not disappear and be useful for something. Gems allow you to improve the central location or add the rooms to the underworld. Darkness is the local currency for buying passive skills, such as increased damage when hit from the back or the ability to revive after death. Keys are necessary to unlock the skills and are also needed to acquire new weapons. Bosses drop items too, which are spent on essential items. Thanks to an excellent progression system, the hero's death doesn't spoil the mood.

It is important to note that arenas and their sequence are always re-created randomly, updating the number and level of enemies, preventing the game from slipping into a monotonous grind. Given the many secrets, a variety of combat styles, variability in the structure of levels and combinations of protagonist skills game duration can grow to tens of hours.

Another feature of the game is the gods' gifts, which affect the protagonist's abilities in battle or outside of it. For example, Athena's gifts allow you to repel enemies' attacks by dashing, hitting or taking damage. Dionysus, the god of wine-making, will help impose a stupefying effect on weapons, causing opponents to take additional damage. Zeus has everything to do with lightning: his attacks create a chain of electric discharges when he strikes his opponents, they get electrocuted, and so on. The skills of the goddess of beauty Aphrodite weaken the monsters - their attacks do less damage.

There are six types of weapons in Hades, ranging from a simple sword to a long-range weapon. All completely different: the shield allows you to block attacks and run forward, knocking out enemies on the way, the spear can be tossed and then called back, causing them in addition to the damage from the back. Numerous gifts from the gods also affect how you start eliminating enemies in a few minutes after starting the next run. Whether you will approach them closely to leave traps on the ground after the spurt, or start actively dealing damage from afar - the deeper you dive into the game, the more features you will find.
