How to play Baldur’s Gate 3 in Coop

The third part of Baldur’s Gate supports co-op mode from early access. The co-op allows players to travel together through the game world, complete side quests and progress through the storyline.

Below we describe all the necessary steps to help users play in co-op mode.

Features of the cooperative game mode in Baldur’s Gate 3

Co-op in Baldur’s Gate 3 supports the game mode for up to four people at a time. The gameplay is identical to Larian Studios’ two previous projects, the Divinity: Original Sin series. However, the option of choosing solutions during dialogues with NPCs is more elaborated here. Now, the lobby participants can participate in a vote which will decide the dialogue option to choose. Simultaneously, players not participating in the conversation with the NPC can continue to engage in any other activity in the game world.

How to start Coop in Baldur’s Gate 3?

To start cooperative play, you need to go to the main menu of Baldur’s Gate 3. Here, the player will be able to use the “Multiplayer” button; the game will open a kind of hub, where it will be possible to both create your multiplayer lobby and connect to an existing one.

If a player wants to connect not to a friend, but a random session of another user, it’s possible to choose one of the available servers in the list on the left. Here it’s also possible to choose to connect directly to a friend. There is a filter window on the right side of the screen, where the player, if necessary, can select the preferred session parameters.

To host a game session, the player must select the “Create Game” button in the multiplayer game hub.

If the user wants to play not with a random person, then the appropriate parameter should be set in the “Who can join your game?”: it’s necessary to select “Friends Only” or “Invitation Only”. For the second parameter, the host will first have to provide the Server ID, and the connecting friend will choose “Direct Connection” and enter this ID. With the “Friends Only” option, everything is much simpler: the host clicks on the portrait of one of the friends they want to invite; they immediately receive a corresponding notification. If one of the friends leaves the game, another player will acquire control of the character.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, it is possible to save your progress made during co-op play. To continue the last game session, the host will have to run the corresponding savefile, and all his friends who participated in the previous playthrough will be invited automatically.

So far, Baldur’s Gate 3 only supports this co-op mode; however, the developers announced the introduction of HotSeat in split-screen format in the future. One of the planned features for the release has also been cross-play between Steam and Google Stadia players.

After studying the steps described above, you can easily understand how to play Baldur’s Gate 3 in Coop, and start enjoying the game side by side with your friends. For more help with the game, you can check out our other in-depth guides on Baldur’s Gate 3.
