Hunt: Showdown Gameplay
Hunt: Showdown features two separated game modes, and both of them are online. The first mode is "Bounty Hunt", where players enter a map alone or with up to two friends and search for clues to track down a mythical beast. One of the challenges is survival because there are a lot of dangerous creatures scattered around the area. After finding every clue, the location of the target is narrowed down until you can locate its lair. Every fight with the beasts is challenging and requires proper coordination from all team members.
Various beasts that try to prevent you from finding clues have multiple difficulty levels, and some of them can quickly kill the entire group. However, players often have to split up to progress because of the massive area. Some monsters are weak, and they can be easily killed, but their existence enhances the horrific atmosphere of the game.
Players get to control a patron to a "Bloodline" of bounty hunters, which can use sorcerous Dark Vision ability to make the process of finding clues easier. You gain experience and in-game currency for killing the monsters on the way to the boss; however, every bullet you waste on them makes the final fight much harder. And winning the final battle does not complete the game, you have to perform a ritual to banish the monster and to carry the trophy to the exit from the map, which randomly spawns after the fight. At this time your location is visible to other players who can also do the hunt in the same area, and they can track you down to take the trophy away.
The second game mode of Hunt: Showdown is accessible through Quickplay in the main menu, and it is a battle royale for a high number of players who need to survive and activate multiple energy wellsprings around the map. They can encounter monsters too, and players need to gather and use weaponry to ensure their survival.
The setting of the game is nineteenth-century Louisiana in an alternative history, and there is a horrifying force that is invading through interworld rifts. It can infect people and animals to turn them into terrifying creatures. Players can use various weapons to fight against beasts and each other. You can use revolvers, single-shot rifles and crossbows, and all of them require slow manual reload. You can also use machetes and axes to save the ammo, but it can be risky because most of the monsters excel in melee combat. Another way is to set bear-traps and throw handmade bombs which you can purchase or craft yourself.
Hunt: Showdown offers a single-player tutorial at the beginning of the experience that teaches how to use various weapons and survive in the wilderness full of monsters. However, you can also enjoy multiplayer Bounty Hunt or Quickplay game modes. The communication in the game is limited, and that creates a challenging environment where players need to learn how to survive against both opponents and hostile creatures. Sometimes hostile players may need to work together to survive, and that adds even more depth into the gameplay.
The unique mix of player-versus-environment and player-versus-player game modes in Hunt: Showdown provides an excellent survival experience in a horrifying atmosphere. It has a lot of different ways and strategies to play, and it's suitable both for casual and hardcore players.
