Kepler is a massive seamless diverse world with seven different biomes populated by exotic wildlife wandering the terrain covered with bizarre vegetation. The planet offers to witness breathtaking, surreal sceneries and fantastic beasts. Toxic swamps, dark caverns, anomaly zones and sheer cliffs are full of dangers, and some of the alien creatures are cunning and fierce. Exploration is a primary storytelling tool of the developers, and it affects character progression.

Weekly resets advance the narrative, and when the long night comes, the players fall asleep and keep their memories, but you have to start again during the next cycle. That way, you get progression points on your account, and it unlocks various game modes and other account-wide rewards. Every week adds news mysteries, new mechanics and new locations to Kepler, and every cycle brings a unique experience to the players.

The essential location on Kepler is the remains of the colonists' spaceship Artemis, and it is the place for players to respawn, meet, socialize and get new quests. The quests provide more information about the planet and your mission's real goal, and they also reward you with resources, gear and knowledge points. You also may work cooperatively with other colonists to build a base and explore new locations along with obtaining new technologies and equipment.

Harsh conditions on the planet in Population Zero challenge the players to endure hunger, thirst, toxicity and extreme temperatures. Crafting allows you to create equipment to overcome those obstacles, and it works closely with the tech tree, which means that more tech skills allow your colonist to create better gear and tools to survive and explore. You may also establish small settlements in the wild, and the building is an essential tool for both survival and players' self-expression.
