RIFT Gameplay

RIFT is a free-to-play MMORPG that emphasizes collecting, crafting and customizing your gear. It was first released in 2011 and is developed by Trion Worlds. The game is available on Steam for free and is only available on PC. It is commonly acknowledged that World of Warcraft strongly influences RIFT, and so can be useful for people who have experience in MMO's but want to try something different.

Something unique to RIFT is that this customization of your character's class and play style, through the assignment of 'souls' which configure to give benefits to specific gameplay roles, can be changed at any time outside combat. This means that your tanky character can switch to a healer in-between fights if you think that will be better for the next encounter. This is a very rare system in MMORPG games, which usually encourage, or force, a commitment to a specific role and class system as you progress, to some extent.

The soul trees are very recognizable for anyone who has played an RPG game with a skill tree, and so other than the ability to buy multiple roles and change them, the system is easily understood. Your soul tree is divided into three sections, all of which are class specific.

The combat in the game will feel very familiar to standard MMORPG systems, such as WoW, however as you level up, you gain new abilities and attack types quickly – and can have a full ability bar to utilize within the first 15 levels or so. This helps you to build on your character fairly fast, even though the combat itself isn't as quick or fluid as more modern games.

In terms of content, the game has been updated, and there has been content added over the years of its existence; however, a new server has recently been created called 'RIFT Prime.' The Prime server allows for players to experience the old-school gameplay, through the original content and level caps, but then over time you will gain access to the newer content, in the order, it was introduced. This allows for new players to try the game in its original 2011 form if they wish. The quests in the game are primarily fetched, kill or escort quests, as are very standard in old-style MMORPG's.

The visuals of RIFT will feel somewhat dated, but it has a vast world which includes varied and exciting areas, as well as different enemies and bosses between each dungeon, raid, and location on the map. The enemies which you fight scale to each area on the map, however from the very start you will need to be at least careful not to engage too many at once, as they are surprisingly powerful for early-game opponents.

RIFT is a game which is very representative of the era it was made in, and is recognizably old-school, especially if you play RIFT Prime, this game is perfect for someone looking for nostalgia. If you have played other games from the original MMO era such as World of Warcraft, you can quickly identify with this title.

RIFT Classes

This fantasy MMO has five different 'callings' in the form of 'Warrior,' 'Cleric,' 'Rogue,' 'Mage' or 'Primalist.' These classes have subclasses within each but are also all deeply customizable to offer very different experiences between two characters with the same calling.
