Risen Gameplay

Risen is the first part of the project released by Piranha Bytes after the Gothic series. The release took place in October 2009. This game has combined the best features from Gothic 2: Night of the Raven, performing them in a new style, as well as adding some innovations.

According to the plot, which is divided here into four chapters, the main character and his companion Sarah, enters the ship of the Inquisition, after which they become witnesses of the storm caused by the Titan. Sensing the doom of the ship, the head of the Inquisition uses a magic artefact and teleports from the boat. The people remaining on the vessel became victims of the Titan, who destroyed the ship and sent Sarah and the protagonist to the bottom. After that, the main character wakes up on the shore of the island, surrounded by the corpses of the ship's crew. Sarah also survives. Realizing that sitting still and waiting for help is not the best option, the protagonist decides to go inland for help. From this moment, the main adventure begins.

Risen is the spiritual successor of the Gothic series. This project has adopted many gameplay features from its predecessor; the game is a classic representative of the RPG genre, in which all the basic mechanics count it as an RPG.

Storyline of Risen

Risen will tell a fascinating and gripping story about the confrontation between humans and titans, and the fantastic journey of the Nameless Hero. In addition to the plot, the game has a large variety of side missions and story quests.

Combat system in Risen

Battle System Risen
The battles in Risen are one of the vital hardcore mechanics of the game.

Fights take place using free combinations of block, attack and dodge. The artificial intelligence of opponents will not allow dealing with them with the help of spam attacks, and even the right equipment is not a guarantee of victory here. Each enemy will dodge and wait for the right moment to attack, so each battle must be approached using tactics. Besides, it is essential to know that certain types of mobs have their habits.
For example, wolves try to go around from behind, while boars in a fit of rage rush with all their might to ram the main character.

Living world and environment

The developers have done a great job to create a high-quality and indeed "living" world. By reaching the very first settlement, the player will be able to see a well-developed location in which the life of various NPCs is in full swing. The player will be able to see residents living a measured life and during the day doing different things.

Living World and Environment of the Risen
A well-designed and detailed flora and fauna, which is harmoniously combined with individual locations, also adds life to the game.

A great soundtrack deserves a separate word, perfectly fitting and complementing the whole picture of Risen.

System of attributes and skills

During the adventure, the main character will become stronger, at the same time acquiring new skills and improving his characteristics. Also, he will be able to master various techniques from three main areas: crafts, magic and theft. Each of them opens access to separate mechanics, such as creating potions, forging weapons, stealing, etc.

System of Abilities and Skills Risen
The game has a convenient window that clearly shows the current characteristics of the player's character.

NPCs specializing in one area or another, will help in the study of individual skills, as well as improving the characteristics of the character.
