Stardew Valley Gameplay

A farming simulator represents the core gameplay of Stardew Valley. The players need to take care of their territory by selecting from various seeds and cultivating them. Some of the plants are only available during specific seasons and require different caring methods, and most of the time players harvest them before the next season. You can also build barns and raise animals to produce eggs, milk and meat. Micromanagement of multiple aspects of such a farm represents the core gameplay. The players can improve their equipment and tools to automate some of them to reduce the required time and allow you to explore other parts of the game.

For each of the new players, Stardew Valley opens with a character creation menu, and it is possible to select a gender, hairstyle, skin colour, eyes and starting cloths. After that, you can witness the player’s dying grandfather that gives the character a letter to open “once he’s an adult and life has crushed him down”. Fast-forward twenty years in the story, and you indeed realized that the corporate life does not suit you, and the player decides to read the letter and inherit the old farm in the magnificent Stardew Valley.

Apart from peaceful farm life, the players may explore a local mine. It contains over a hundred randomly generated caves, in which you may find better gems, ores and other resources. It is one of the most effective ways to acquire better equipment and valuables to create more efficient tools and weapons. However, as you progress through the levels, the enemies become more and more powerful. The combat of Stardew Valley consists of top-down hack-and-slash mechanics similar to early Zelda games. Monsters have different attack types, and for some battles, the players have to craft specific gear. You can learn attack patterns, drop lists for each monster, and use the environment appropriately to gain an advantage.

Stardew Valley presents a thoughtful skill system, in which players can increase their level in various areas of expertise by participating in different activities. Nearly every task grants you a few skills points, but the players cannot manually track them. When the characters go to bed, the players can see if they have enough points in a specific area to level up. The game offers the following ability branches:

  • Farming
  • Mining
  • Foraging
  • Fishing
  • Combat

These five trees also split at level five and ten, and the players can pick a specialization to get access to various permanent bonuses and recipes. The progress in each skill also unlocks more crafting options and abilities.

Apart from the farm and dangerous creatures, the world of Stardew Valley is full of other inhabitants. The players can encounter additional characters in different locations, such as forests, towns, and specific quest areas. Some of them offer you to trade, or you can gift valuable items to raise your reputation level. Most of the inhabitants have a story arc, and you can choose how to interact with them or ignore these events whatsoever. In any case, you will see the outcome of your actions in each particular situation. The players can also meet many possible bachelors or bachelorettes to date and marry, which provides the character with additional bonuses.

Stardew Valley does not end in its story, and there is a wide range of available activities during each season. The players can continuously explore and engage in randomly-generated events alone or with friends in an up to four players lobby. The bright world of Stardew Valley is friendly to both casual and hardcore players, and unique soundtrack provides the gamers with a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere to keep developing the farm and unlocking more and more events and bonuses.
