Styx: Master of Shadows Gameplay
Styx: Master of Shadows is a stealth-action game developed by Cyanide Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game is a prequel to the game Of Orcs and Men and tells the story of a goblin named Styx, the very first and oldest of the goblin family. The game was released in October 2014.
In the story, the player will play the role of Styx - a Goblin, who is two hundred years old. The game takes place in the forgotten Akenash Tower, where Men and Elves protect the World Tree, in which the secret of the creation of the Goblin race is hidden. Driven by the goal of earning extra money and learning about his origins, taking advantage of the situation of a political war between Humans and Elves, he decides to try to get to the tree and find out the truth.
The gameplay is based on the passage of the Akenash Tower, divided into locations, and the completion of the assigned tasks. Using various features of the stealth mechanics, the player must perform kills, obtain intelligence, solve puzzles, etc. All this is backed up by a well-executed RPG system.
Skill system and equipment upgrades
An advanced RPG system allows the player to unlock powerful new skills and impressive special moves. Amber is able to endow Styx with such spectacular powers as invisibility, "amber vision" and the ability to clone oneself. The game encourages the player's desire to explore levels, allowing him to get more information about the protagonist's past, as well as steal treasures and improve equipment. In addition to improving the basic parameters of the character, some types of equipment open up access to new game mechanics.
Stealth is the main feature of Styx: Master of Shadows. Interesting, corridor locations, which contain a huge number of detours, allow the player to go through the levels in different ways. Even more variability is added by the methods that the player is allowed to resort to achieve his goals. Sit in the shadows and wait for the moment when the path is open, or silently eliminate opponents who got in the way - everything is your choice. The game forces the user to think about workarounds, choose the most correct solutions, and not rush through. The huge variability in the gameplay adds a lot of replayability to Styx.
Graphics and level design
Styx: Master of Shadows has very good graphics for its time. Nice and detailed textures are combined with elaborate and filled locations. In addition, the game contains shadows and shaders.
At each level, there are caches where the player can get hold of something useful. And many guards do not just walk back and forth along their route: they still communicate with each other and even act out some scenes.
On the way, the player will meet a huge variety of different opponents, both humans and elves. Due to the emphasis on stealth, all enemies have good attention, eyesight and hearing. One wrong move and they will immediately try to track down and eliminate the player. A separate word should be said about the types of opponents in Styx: Master of Shadows. The further the player advances in the game, the stronger the opponents will be. Some can be eliminated independently in battle, while others can be killed only by the influence of special skills or environmental objects.
Styx: Master of Shadows is one of the great projects of a rather rare genre that will appeal to all fans of stealth games. In addition, the game will appeal to all fans of titles such as Thief, Of Orcs and Men and Dishonored.
