Styx: Shards of Darkness Gameplay

Styx: Shards of Darkness is a stealth-action computer game that is a sequel to the first part of the series. The project was developed by Cyanide Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive. The release took place in March 2017.

The events unfold in the city of Toben, completely closed due to the congress of politicians. The narrative of the protagonist tells about the formation of a new clan, administering justice and trying to take over the world. The story begins with the moment when Styx steals his first thing - the salary from the guard and then goes to the shelter. On the way, he is met by the captain of the Heldrin clan. Having caught the goblin, instead of dying, she offers him a deal he cannot refuse. Under its terms, Styx undertakes to steal the staff from the ambassador flying on an airship, and in return, he will receive ten bottles of amber. But at the moment when the theft of the agreed thing was almost accomplished, a mysterious elf with the ability to reincarnate intervenes in Styx's plans.

Styx: Shards of Darkness takes place not only in Toben, but also in the Hunter Village, the Underground Ravines, and wherever goblins are hated as a faction. Since the congress of politicians consisted of representatives of the goblin extermination management organization, the leaders of the congress - dark elves, gnomes, always try to interfere with the protagonist.

As in the previous part, the gameplay of Styx: Shards of Darkness is tied to stealth and the passage of locations without attracting much attention. The player has at the disposal of the player huge levels with many forks and secret passages, which allows you to pass them in different ways. For each of the locations will be given a specific goal, to achieve which the player will have various useful skills and complete freedom of action.

Stealth system

Since the previous part, the game has undergone significant changes for the better in terms of the stealth system. At the locations, Styx is provided with even more ways for a different passage.

Detours, secret rooms, interaction with the environment - all of this has become more and better.

The game focuses mainly on stealth. Styx has never been a fighter. If the player is noticed, then in an open confrontation he will not survive. There are a variety of ways to eliminate opponents: from a dagger in the back and a chandelier over the head to poisoned food and throwing a kick into the abyss. However, even taking into account such possibilities, the game leaves the user with the possibility of passing in the pacifist mode.

Graphic component

One of the main innovations is the updated graphics for Styx: Shards of Darkness. The developers have made the transition from the outdated game engine Unreal Engine 3 to the more current Unreal Engine 4. The game has noticeably more decorations, and the levels themselves have increased significantly. Each level consists of dozens of rooms, corridors and hidden loopholes. Visually, the textures have become more detailed. Lighting and shadows have changed for the better. High-quality shaders have appeared.

RPG elements

The game contains RPG elements, expressed in Styx's ability to improve his abilities. Some of the skills from the previous part have been reworked, while new ones have been added.

Poisoned spitting, amber vision and others - all this will add even more variety and variability to the walkthrough.

Styx: Shards of Darkness is a great sequel that has received many necessary changes and innovations. The game is recommended to all fans of the stealth-action genre, as well as this series of games. In addition, the game will appeal to all fans of titles like Thief and Dishonored.
