Subterrain is a Sci-Fi survival horror game on Mars with a huge procedurally generated open world. The game is the spiritual successor to Darkwood. The developer and publisher is Pixellore Inc. The release took place in January 2016.
In the Subterrain storyline, the player will play the role of Doctor West, apparently the only survivor in an underground city on Mars. He suddenly finds himself in a prison complex filled with many dead people. You have to fight, survive and do whatever you see fit among a limited amount of resources and ruthless enemies. The player must first of all survive, as well as find out more about what kind of epidemic hit the colony.
The gameplay is very similar to that of Darkwood, but the concept of Subterrain is different. The player must navigate the generated world, collect resources, confront opponents and gradually advance through the story.
Several survival mechanics are implemented in the game. First of all, the system of needs should be noted. The player must closely monitor hunger, thirst, need for sleep, etc. so that the character does not die. Since the main problem of the game world is the virus, the main character is also not protected from it. The health indicator will visually display the percentage of damage to the hero's body by infection. In addition to Infection, the game contains conditions such as Bleeding, Fractures, Exhaustion and Hypothermia. To heal, the player needs to collect materials and research items promptly to produce medicines.
The game implements a combat system, also in many ways similar to Darkwood. The game provides a wide arsenal of melee and ranged weapons. Some weapons can be customized with the appropriate modules.
Clearing locations requires constant attention and concentration since some opponents will pose a huge threat. Thanks to the sophisticated AI, they run to the noise, and some of them can open doors. There are also several types of enemies. In addition to the division into ordinary zombies and large zombies, there are those that can shoot, while others are nimble and dodgy. Each battle will require skill, tactics and a special approach from the player.
The main enemy of the player is a real-time infection. In addition to the need for early destruction of mutant cocoons, which will evolve over time, the player needs to adjust to the simulation of the spread of infection throughout the Mars colony. The hero must get out of the colony as quickly as possible before it's too late.
Crafting and researches
Exploring locations in the Subterrain, the player will come across various items and materials for crafting. It is necessary to collect all the resources as much as possible since in the future it will be useful when arranging the base and creating other useful things. Even the most useless trash can be recycled into more important crafting materials. In addition, resources can also be obtained by creating your own farm, as well as mining rare ore. All available materials can then be used to create survival items or weapons using a 3D printer and Bio-Connector.
The game is based on the fear of the unknown, perfectly demonstrated by the mechanics taken from Darkwood.
The developers managed to realize a gloomy, oppressive atmosphere, causing a feeling of absolute hopelessness.
Subterrain is a great top-down survival horror that will definitely appeal to all fans of the genre. This title is also recommended to all fans of Sci-Fi setting and games like Darkwood.
