The Surge Gameplay

The Surge is a computer game in the Action/RPG genre with a third-person view, developed by Deck13 Interactive. The game is set in a dystopian future where humanity has exhausted the resources of Earth.

The game is set in a dystopian world, where megacorporations are trying to preserve the Earth's remnants, which has undergone severe climate change. At the same time, corporations use their inventions only to achieve their goals.

The game's battle system was inspired by Dark Souls series of video games but had many differences. The combat system of The Surge can be described as tactical close-quarters combat. The hero will be able to improve his body with various implants and gadgets. He has an exoskeleton at his disposal, which must be used to survive in the CREO corporation's research complex, which is populated by insane employees. It allows him to move faster and gain access to more powerful techniques. It's possible to upgrade the exoskeleton by installing additional armour or more powerful weapons.

The protagonist will have to meet both other fighters in exoskeletons and fighting robots of enormous size and scary creatures that look like monsters. To massacre the enemies, the hero has all sorts of melee weapons at his disposal. During the battles, you have to actively manoeuvre, dodge enemy strikes and block them to stay alive. The game has vertical and horizontal attacks instead of light and heavy strikes; this feature can be used in combat to hit the enemy on unprotected parts of their bodies.

In The Surge, there are five types of weapons, and each has its own set of blows and bindings - you won't be able to quickly switch from the heavy hammer or axe to a single-handed weapon. Also, you can use the drone that replaces the magic spells: it can shoot enemies, pour fire from a flamethrower on them, freeze opponents and do other useful things.

One of the game features is the ability to hit opponents in certain parts of the body. And you can choose the point of attack in real-time. It is necessary to hit the enemies in their weak points. You can also cut off the enemies limbs to capture their equipment.

The resources can be used to assemble and modify your equipment on the operations bay workbench, the local safe place where you can rest between battles. You can also replenish health and medicines and invest in upgrading the exoskeleton with parts collected from dead bodies. There is, in fact, only one characteristic that can be upgraded - energy capacity. It determines how many modifications you can put on yourself and how powerful your armour is.

Arms, legs, torso and head, depending on the modification, consume different amounts of charge, providing unique advantages in battle: increasing protection, health level, your energy reserves or strength. You only need to find blueprints and create new modifications from materials and parts on a dedicated workbench.

The Surge has plenty of secrets and workarounds. Exploring the locations is an essential part of the game. Only a sufficiently pumped hero can get to certain parts of the levels. So it makes sense in the game to return to already visited locations to find something new and discover previously inaccessible secrets.
