Teeworlds Gameplay

Teeworlds represent a combination of classic sprite-based shooters and the modern arcade era shooters. The players explore using the two-dimensional, side-scrolling maps similar to the platformer genre, but it uses FPS-style controls for movements and chatting. The game also introduces a grappling hook, double jump mechanics and advanced manoeuvring. You can grapple other players and pull them closer. A broad range of available levels features different settings, such as caves, winter, desert, jungle, grass and many others. Each map has various additional elements, which include spikes, pitfalls and metal obstacles.

Teeworlds features multiple weapons for the players to use. Each player begins the experience with a pistol and a hammer; it's used for melee attacks. You can search and pick up three more kinds of weapons that are somewhere on the maps. These weapons include a grenade launcher, a shotgun and a laser gun. All of them have unique mechanics, different trajectory, fire rates and damage ratio. You do not have to pick up ammo manually, and it slowly replenishes over time at different rates. However, you can pick up hearts for health and shields for armour at specific spots in the game.

Teeworlds features a wide range of game modes available for the players in both single-player and multiplayer versions. The official vanilla modes are:

Deathmatch focuses on players competing against everyone else until someone gets a required number of kills to win the game.
Team Deathmatch is similar to the previous one, but the players battle as teams.
Capture The Flag allows two groups of players to fight and steal other side's flag to bring it to their base to win.

However, the players may customize the game, and a large number of levels include custom game modes, and the most famous of them are:

DDrace features a racing mode for the players.
FNG provides the players with lasers to freeze the opponents and move them to the pitfalls.
infClass is a standard zombie mode for a large number of players simultaneously.

The game features a map editor, which allows the players to create custom maps with unique gameplay rules. You can also upload additional models and textures to create unique environments, and other players would be able to download the assets through the built-in map system. Teeworlds use simplified textures in a two-dimensional environment, and that affects the performance of the game positively. It's possible to run the game most machines, and downloading additional assets does not require a lot of traffic. You can also upload custom characters to the maps, and others would be able to see them as well.

The retro atmosphere of the game and a fitting to its soundtrack tends to bring back old school players to experience Teeworlds using various mechanics from the modern shooters. The project fits both casual and hardcore players due to the simplicity of the basic gameplay; however, using most of the mechanics efficiently requires the players to practice a lot in various multiplayer modes. The community updates the game regularly with additional maps, models and game modes, and the open-source allows them to change most of the in-game elements. Multiplayer works in the client-server system, and everyone can host a game for others to play together.
