Torchlight 1 Review
Torchlight 1 is a hack-and-slash RPG computer game in a steampunk setting developed by Runic Games.
- Excellent Level Design
- Lots of different activities
- Well-designed Pet System
- Action-filled hack-and-slash Gameplay
Many developers who have participated in the development of the "Diablo" series also worked on "Torchlight", and it's noticeable not only in the gameplay. The game graphics are three-dimensional with a ceiling perspective, which looks almost like the isometric camera used in Diablo. The playable hero can be controlled by mouse clicks and keyboard shortcuts.
The game is set in a city named Torchlight, located on a nameless mountain that is the source of a valuable resource called Ember. It is not only expensive material but also a source of dangerous effects on living organisms. After prolonged contact with Ember, any creature can become possessed and turn into a monster. The main goal in this game is to save the world from the influence of the Ember.
Beneath the city is a tiered system of catacombs, mines, necropolises, and volcanic zones, which the player explores in search of equipment, weapons, money, and items related to private orders. All levels of Torchlight dungeons are filled with various monsters; defeating them, the protagonist gets experience points and glory, which improves the skills and characteristics of strength, agility, defense and magic. Many monsters are unique and found only on a specific type of landscape. Optionally, the player can take third-party quests or visit third-party dungeon locations, from which he cannot at any time be transported to the city, unlike common areas.
The game generates each dungeon level by putting together small dungeon blanks. Each billet is handmade and can be used in multiple rooms. The blanks can contain scripted events and interactive objects, such as levers that open secret rooms or extend bridges to a previously inaccessible area. This approach to level generation allows for more challenging dungeons with quality design.
Like in Fate and Fable 2, the player can choose a pet: a dog (wolf) and a cat (lynx), which fully participate in the game, fighting at the protagonist's side. The pet is equipped with its inventory allowing them to carry a small amount of equipment (amulet and two rings). The pet can go to town and sell everything in the inventory while the player continues the adventure. The pet can also learn up to two spells of the player's choice; the pet's magical energy is used to apply them.
Another special feature pets in Torchlight is the ability to turn it into various monsters. This requires fish, which can be obtained through a simple fishing minigame on the Torchlight dock. Fishing holes are also scattered throughout the various levels of the game. The catch in the "wild" areas is often more varied and valuable than in the city.
