Tyranny Gameplay

Tyranny is an isometric dark fantasy RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment. The publisher is Paradox Interactive. The game was released in November 2016. This project has become remarkable among the gaming community due to its non-linearity, a rethinking of the canons of the RPG genre plots, as well as the quality in general.

Tyranny takes place in a fictional universe, set in the spirit of dark fantasy, where, shortly before the events of the game, a large-scale conflict between good and evil took place in the world, in which the dark forces emerged victoriously. The player will play the role of one of the subordinates of the sinister ruler Kyros - Fatebinder. At the start of the game, Kyros has taken over almost the entire world, except for the Tiers - an area in which the troops of the rebel organization are still active. The armies under his control - "Disgraced", hesitate to suppress the resistance of the rebels. In anger at what is happening, the Overlord sends the main character to the scene to proclaim the Edict - a spell of incredible power that, after a week, if the rebels are not defeated, will destroy all life on the Tiers, including the Overlord's subordinates. As a judge, investigator and executioner all rolled into one, the protagonist must resort to all possible methods so that the will of Kyros is fulfilled, and the player will have to help him in this.

Gameplay of Tyranny

The gameplay has absorbed all the best from other representatives of the isometric RPG genre, being in many ways similar to the game Pillars of Eternity previously released by Obsidian Entertainment and imitation of the classic games of Black Isle Studios. Trying to achieve the main goal, the player will always have to make decisions that in one way or another affect the state of the Tyranny world and the attitude of various NPCs towards the Executor. The player is given complete freedom of action and exploration of the world. As you progress, the character's strength will grow, and this will allow you to get and improve skills and abilities with the help of a classless development system.

Nonlinearity of gameplay

Tyranny does not explain to the player how and what he should do. He has an ultimate goal, which he can achieve in different ways. Often, each quest can be completed in several radically different ways.

In the same way, in dialogues, there are always several answer options, the choice of which will determine the further relationship with the interlocutor.

The game clearly demonstrates the slightest changes in the status of the main hero. Everyone and everything has a reputation scale. Companions, bosses, organizations, even things. Almost every word provokes the growth of someone's trust or fear. Raising any status bar for the protagonist is eventually rewarded with passive bonuses and active combat abilities.

RPG elements

The game has several key role-playing mechanics, including a classless character development system, the creation of a squad of companions, customization of the main character, and others. Thanks to these features, the player can create his unique character with the desired fighting style, as well as develop his own tactics of conducting a battle with a squad of his allies.

Combat system

The combat system in Tyranny is classic real-time combat with a tactical pause. However, at the same time, it has been enriched with new group interaction mechanics and looks very modern. The player can ask the detachment for certain battle formations, behaviour in battle, and also orders.

Many techniques and skills, as well as elaborate tactical mechanics, give the player a wide scope to create their fighting style and strategy.

Tyranny is one of the best RPGs of the classic style at the moment. The game will appeal to all fans of the genre, as well as fans of titles such as Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment and Pillars of Eternity.
