More about Old-school RPG Games

The whole RPG genre started with so-called "MUDs", or "multi-user dungeons" which were a text-based origin of modern games. Later, all of this evolved into the more common old RPGs that are familiar to the experienced gamers. Dungeons & Dragons was the basis for many of them, as it earned the name of the first commercially successful role-playing game.

Classic retro fantasy RPGs inspired by Tolkien universe provided many complicated storylines and quests that told about the lore in details. It is fair to say that the older games were much more complicated than recent projects, as they often didn't provide minimaps and markers. The questing system usually presented as a journal written in the form of a book. On many occasions, it wasn't that easy to figure out the point of final destination. The interaction with NPCs was an essential feature of success.

Old-school RPG Games often utilize a specific character development system. It's both level-based when the character gets better by gaining the experience points, and skill-based, where the main hero becomes more effective in battle. You can also pick additional traits that would be handy in other aspects such as stealth-killing, night vision and so on. The complicated scheme of retro role-playing games allows to fully immerse into the gameplay because they allow players to decide who they wished to be. The choices made affected the encounters with NPCs and the story, respectively.
