More About Text Based MMO Games
Most of the Text-Based MMO Games were created at late 80s-early 90s. Since user computers were starting to get excellent graphics support at the time, developers who wanted to attract an audience had to rely on other aspects of the game. The Text-Based MMOs always distinguished by a well-developed plot, exciting quests and an unusual, almost bookish atmosphere.
Some Text-Based MMOs had well-drawn images for inventory items and headpieces to somehow decorate the game. More hardcore variants did not have illustrations at all. Everything depended only on the imagination of the developer. Some MMOs used ASCII graphics, which were quite colourful and funny. This type of graphics is not the most convenient for development, and the result was sometimes quite messy, but it worked sufficiently.
Nowadays, there are almost no new Text-Based MMOs. Most of the modern text games are in the development of five or more years, so it's not the right example. Most of the currently active games exist since the beginning of the development of this genre, so it would not be a wrong choice to start acquaintance with Text-Based MMO by choosing one of the old and popular games.
Most of the Text-Based MMO are browser games. Only a few of them have a standalone client. It allows you to run Text MMO's even on the most outdated computer, especially if you remember the fact that the most popular Text-Based MMOs were developed at the times when such computers were the pinnacle of technology.

- DragonRealms is a medieval fantasy game, developed in 1996. It has classic character creation and gameplay for an RPG game, and as a whole game, it has no difference of ordinary RPGs except for its extreme form.
- Urban Dead is a text-based survival MMORPG in a zombie setting. There is an opportunity to play this game both as survival and as an infected. The game also has no NPCs, so that players drive all of the game events.
- Starmourn is a new sci-fi sandbox MUD. It has an excellent opportunity to explore the world and simple ASCII graphics. Despite the colourful trailers and accompanying pictures, the game is entirely text-based.
