Multi-User Dungeons, or MUDs, are the originators of the modern MMORPG genre that has swept the globe in the 21st century. These text-based online multiplayer games date back to the 1980s, and they opened the doors to many of the concepts we see in games like World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, and Final Fantasy XIV. But what exactly are MUDs, why were they so innovative, and how do they continue to influence the gaming world today?

MUDs originated in the late 70s and early 80s, with games like “MUD1” developed by Richard Bartle and Roy Trubshaw at the University of Essex in the UK. The initial concept was to create a multi-user virtual world, where people could interact with the environment and each other in real-time, albeit through text. This may seem rudimentary compared to the graphic-intensive virtual worlds of modern MMOs, but at the time, it was revolutionary.

While MUDs vary in their specifics, most follow similar basic structures. Players can explore virtual worlds, interact with other players and NPCs, complete quests, fight monsters, and accumulate experience and items. The gameplay occurs entirely through text commands, such as “go north” to move or “attack goblin” to engage in combat. This format encourages imaginative play, much like a text-based choose-your-own-adventure game or a tabletop RPG like Dungeons and Dragons.
